With a history dating back to 1842, Langmeil today is a blend of Barossa’s cultural beginnings and a family’s commitment to old vine winemaking.
Pioneer Christian Auricht first settled the trading site of Langmeil in Barossa where he planted what is understood to be the world’s oldest surviving shiraz vineyard, planted in 1843.
Today the site is a captivating pocket of Australia’s pioneer settlement and vinous history now owned by the Lindner family, whose own mark on the Barossa landscape spans six-generations of regional farming, food, community and wine.
Resurrecting Barossa’s aged vines is an undertaking Langmeil continues to take in its stride since becoming custodian of the notable property and its vineyards in 1996. These, along with two other unique vineyard sites in Eden Valley and Lyndoch, are the foundation for its dedicated ‘Old Vine Garden’ wines that span the Barossa Old Vine Charter of 35 to 125+ year-old vines.

Meet the maker
Tell me your story – what got you involved in wine making?
Wine is in my blood – I’m a sixth generation of the Barossa’s Lindner family and a third generation Australian-Italian. In the early 90’s I started working as a cellar hand at Orlando Wines and was selected to study a two-year ‘vine to wine’ course which I thoroughly enjoyed and did well in. I then went on to complete my studies to become a winemaker.
In our post show visitor survey from 2017’s shows, the Barossa was identified as the visitors favourite wine region / wines. What do you think makes the Barossa so special?
Barossa is home to some of the oldest vineyards in the world and has a strong cultural and winemaking history, it’s not something that can be bought and taken elsewhere (except in a bottle!). Our sense of family, community and authenticity shows through our wine and we love to share it.
What’s your favourite wine from your own range that you’d recommend our visitors trying at the Good Food & Wine Show?
Our Valley Floor Shiraz is my favourite wine and we will have it at the Good Food and Wine Show. This wine is produced from grapes sourced from the Valley Floor, our own vineyards and some of our growers, who are like family. This wine was also awarded the Barossa Trust Mark as a true representation of an authentic Barossa shiraz.
Tell us one thing that makes your own wines so special?
My family spans six generations of regional farming, food, community and wine on the Barossa landscape and we are passionate about our history and our wines.
If you could only drink one wine for the rest of your life, (hard one, we know!) what would that be and what food would you pair it with?
No I can’t do that! I love the diversity of the old and new wines and my food.
For visitors planning a trip to the Barossa, what would you recommend them including in their itinerary of what not to miss?
There is so much to see and do in the Barossa – it’s not just about the wine (surprisingly). A visit to the Barossa Farmers market, Whispering Wall, Steingarten lookout, Vintners Restaurant, Ferment Asian…and there over 70 cellar doors! Check out the Barossa.com website.
