Executive Chef – Oakridge Wines
Matt Stone is arguably the leading sustainable chef in Australian dining.
His has risen to the top of the culinary world since starting cooking in Margaret River, Western Australia in 2002. In 2003 he began an apprenticeship at Leeuwin Estate, and after moving to Perth, he was appointed Sous Chef at the famed Perth restaurant, Star Anise, at the age of 20.
At just 22, Matt was approached by designer and Greenhouse Perth owner Joost Bakker to join his team as Head Chef. At Greenhouse Perth, Matt embraced Joost’s philosophies of preparing fresh, sustainable, locally-sourced, whole-foods – and made a name for himself as a serious innovator and progressive cook.
Matt put Greenhouse at the front of Perth’s dining culture and following from the success of that restaurant he continued to work closely with Joost in setting up Australia’s first no waste café, Silo (then known as Brothl) as well as heading up the kitchens at Joost’s Greenhouse popup restaurants on Sydney Harbour and Melbourne’s Southbank, in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
In July 2015, Stone was offered the position of Executive Chef of Oakridge Estate in the Yarra Valley, Victoria. In his short time there, Matt has successfully set up a kitchen garden and religiously uses local and ethically farmed and foraged produce. Working closely with his partner Jo Barrett, Sous Chef at Oakridge Estate, the pair have firmly put the restaurant at the forefront of the Australian dining scene picking up numerous top awards in 2016 including: Delicious Magazine 2016 Outstanding Chef, The Australian’s Hot 50 Restaurants and awarded best regional restaurant for 2016.
Out of the kitchen and onto the television, Matt has had guest appearances on Masterchef, Recipes that Rock with Blur’s Alex James and the soon to be released “The Great Australian Cook Book”. Matt continues to support and work closely with brands that share a similar ethical ethos and as such is a brand ambassador for the environmentally friendly cleaning brand, ENJO and is an Ambassador for Balter Brewery, a boutique beer.
In 2016, Matt released his first cook book, “The Natural Cook”.
