Established in 1890, Kay Brothers is the oldest winery in McLaren Vale still in founding family hands. Kay’s are specialist traditional red wine makers utilising grapes from our own 22-hectare Amery Vineyard. The grape varieties grown are Shiraz (including the 1892 Block 6 planting), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nero d’ Avola, Grenache, Mataro and Muscat Blanc. The Kay’s winemaking philosophy is to make rich full-bodied fruit-driven wines (using the original Open Fermenters and Basket Press) with a mix of small and medium oak cask maturation.
What do you think makes McLaren Vale so special?
McLaren Vale has the best of everything – we’re blessed to be a short drive from Adelaide, have some of the best beaches in the country a stones throw away from picturesque rolling vineyards. Also as a community the Vale is pretty damn special – we love sharing our passion with visitors and you’ll find we’re always quick to recommend a neighbour or our favourite producer.
What’s your favourite wine from your own range that you’d recommend our visitors trying at the Good Food & Wine Show?
Our Basket Pressed Grenache. We’ve been kicking a few goals with Grenache recently and the newly released 2017 Basket Pressed Grenache is on form. A beautifully versatile wine, its a great style. Aromatic and varietal with loads of character.
Tell us 1 thing that makes your own wines so special?
128 years of unbroken family tradition.
