DOWIE DOOLE is an artisan wine producer in the stunning region of McLaren Vale. Established in 1995 by renowned grape growers and champions of sustainable viticulture; Drew Dowie and Norm Doole, DOWIE DOOLE is now led by Chief Winemaker Chris Thomas. The team are committed to crafting regionally distinctive wines that uphold a sense of place. The founders believed that wine is more than a drink, it is a form of art in a bottle… a legacy that continues to this day.
DOWIE DOOLE’s Estate vineyard in McLaren Vale is biodynamic in conversion and is comprised of 53 hectares of undulating and picturesque landscape, primarily planted to classic McLaren Vale varietals including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and over 50-year-old bush vine Grenache. Select parcels of fruit are also sourced from the founders’ vineyards in McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. The strength of DOWIE DOOLE is the suite of distinctive, premium vineyards that the winemaker can draw upon. Once harvested, the grapes are hand crafted into premium wines with minimal intervention.
5 STAR WINERY – 2018 HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION
Tell me your story – what got you involved in wine making?
The combination of Science and creativity drew me to Winemaking. I graduated in Oenology from the University of Adelaide in 2003 and I worked for top McLaren Vale wineries including Fox Creek and Serafino Wines in McLaren Vale and also abroad with Domaine Changarnier in Burgundy, France before becoming Chief Winemaker at DOWIE DOOLE in 2011. In 2015 the founders of DOWIE DOOLE were looking to retire and so I made the decision to buy the business with a group of like minded investors. In addition to my Winemaking, I love being involved in every aspect of the business, especially travelling the world to share the DOWIE DOOLE story.
What do you think makes McLaren Vale so special?
Situated in the Fleurieu region of South Australia, McLaren Vale is bordered by the southern Mount Lofty Ranges and the sea. The resulting Mediterranean-type climate with a maritime influence ensures the grapes enjoy a long, even ripening period, producing wines of exceptional flavour and generosity. From a visitors perspective, McLaren Vale is in close proximity to Adelaide, just a 45 minute drive away and offers stunning coastline, gourmet local produce and over 80 winery cellar doors.
What’s your favourite wine from your own range that you’d recommend our visitors trying at the Good Food & Wine Show?
I am particularly fond of Grenache It’s one of my favourite varieties to drink and McLaren Vale has a growing reputation for producing the best Grenache in Australia. We are featuring a few Grenache dominant wines at Good Food & Wine Show – a Rosé, our B.F.G. Grenache and our G&T which is a Grenache & Tempranillo blend. I remember the first time that I made Grenache as a young winemaker and being very excited about the wine’s character – it was a revelation. I get a real buzz every time I watch people discover Grenache for the first time
